Securing Our Community

UJA-JCC Greenwich is committed to helping protect our Jewish community and its institutions. We help provide the expertise, training, resources, and relationships needed to strengthen security throughout our region through our partnership with United Jewish Federation of Stamford, New Canaan, and Darien and the Community Security Initiative.

With your support, we help fund a Regional Security Director who works closely with synagogues, schools, community organizations, law enforcement, and other partners to assess risks, strengthen preparedness, and respond when incidents occur.

What We Offer

Security Training & Preparedness

We provide Active Threat, Stop the Bleed, and other critical safety trainings for synagogues, faith based organizations, schools, camps, and community organizations.

Training for Educators

Specialized security and emergency preparedness training helps teachers and staff at local preschools, nursery schools, and Hebrew schools respond effectively in an emergency while preserving a safe, welcoming environment for children. 

Security Risk Assessments

Our security professionals work directly with local Jewish institutions to assess their facilities, identify vulnerabilities, and recommend measures to strengthen physical security and emergency preparedness.

Access to Security Funding

We help local organizations navigate opportunities for federal and state security grants. Together with philanthropic support from our donors, these resources help Jewish institutions make critical security improvements. In addition, UJA-JCC Greenwich allocates designated grants to synagogues for additional security personnel for programs with young children. 

Threat Monitoring & Emergency Communications

The Community Security Initiative monitors and assesses potential threats to the Jewish community and maintains a real-time communications network connecting Jewish institutions across our region, allowing critical information to be shared quickly when it matters most.

Response to Antisemitic Incidents

When antisemitic incidents occur in our region, the Community Security Initiative provides guidance, coordination, and support to help institutions respond appropriately and connect with law enforcement and other resources.

Strong Partnerships

Keeping our community safe requires strong relationships, collaboration, and trust.

We work closely with the Greenwich Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies, strengthening communication and coordination between public safety officials and our Jewish institutions. These partnerships help highlight for law enforcement the unique needs of our community, especially with rising antisemitism,  and that trusted relationships are in place before an emergency occurs.

As part of this ongoing partnership, Greenwich Chief of Police Jim Heavey and our Regional Security Director Jim Comstock traveled together to Israel on a Jewish Federation security mission, where they met with security and public safety professionals, learned from Israel’s experience protecting communities, and brought those insights back to our region.

These relationships—locally, nationally, and in Israel—help us strengthen our approach to security and ensure that our entire community benefits from shared expertise, best practices, and collaboration.

Advocating for a Safer Jewish Community

Our work extends beyond Greenwich. Through our partnership with JFACT, we meet with Connecticut lawmakers at both the state and federal levels to advocate for policies and increased government funding that help Jewish institutions strengthen their security. Direct dialogue with policymakers helps to ensure that the safety of Jewish institutions remains a priority.

Seven Ways We Help Secure Our Community

The Community Security Initiative works to:

  1. Coordinate with local law enforcement to help protect Jewish institutions and strengthen relationships with public safety agencies.
  2. Monitor and assess potential threats to the Jewish community through professional threat intelligence and information sharing.
  3. Respond to antisemitic incidents throughout our region.
  4. Strengthen the physical security of Jewish institutions by identifying vulnerabilities and recommending improvements.
  5. Provide critical training, including active-threat preparedness, Stop the Bleed, and specialized training for educators and staff.
  6. Conduct security assessments and help organizations access funding through federal and state security grants.
  7. Connect Jewish institutions through a real-time emergency communications network, allowing critical information to be shared quickly across our region.
